Over 27 Years Experience

Functional Medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual.

"The Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes"

What are Autoimmune Diseases?
Currently, there are over 80 diseases have been classified as autoimmune. Some of the more common autoimmune diseases include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, Addison's, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 1 diabetes.

Though the above are different autoimmune conditions, they all have the commonality of a specific biochemical process: a runaway immune response, or systemic inflammation, which results in your body attacking its own tissues.

Inflammation isn’t always bad process. Acute inflammation is your body’s appropriate response to infection or trauma. This includes signs and symptoms such as a sore throat, rash, or even a sprained ankle. Inflammation should perform its function and then leave. Where things start to go haywire is when this inflammation lingers and results in chronic inflammation. With things like autoimmune disease, an overactive immune response and chronic inflammation can slowly damage tissues, eventually leading to illness and rapid aging.

Functional Medicine looks at the root cause of the inflammation and asks why that inflammation exists. When we can identify the underlying sources of inflammation, we can truly heal the body. These root causes may be stress, hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities, toxic exposure, genetics, nutrient deficiencies, or leaky gut. If you want to cool off inflammation, resolve oxidative stress or insulin resistance, and reverse CATABOLIC physiology in the body, you must find the source. Physicians are mostly taught to diagnose disease by symptoms, and manage them with drugs, NOT by their underlying cause.

What Causes Autoimmune Diseases?
If you pull at a chain, it always breaks at the weakest link. Wherever your genetic weak link is – your heart, your brain, your liver, your kidneys – that’s where the chain is prone to break. Each person has a different "weak link or links" which could be located  in any of the body's cells, tissues, or systems. Autoimmune diseases can be preventable. To avoid autoimmune disease, you must avoid your specific triggers. As clinicians we hunt for these triggers and cross them off the list one by one.

What are some of these potential triggers to avoid?

Food sensitivities
Leaky gut
Poor lifestyle factors
Diet, Nutrition
Insulin Resistance
Medications, Antibiotics, Acid blockers

Collectively, these cause inflammation and tissue destruction. Each trigger builds upon the other weakening your body. Life is riddled with triggers. Each one adding up until the proverbial "straw that breaks the camel's back" All possibilities are inherent in the Human Genome, it is what we wash over these genes, the messages we send to our genes that determine if and when we express the diseased state.  Our goal is to identify, eliminate, and avoid  as many of them as possible to help support your body’s defense mechanisms and physiology,  while building resilience and health.

Stages of Autoimmunity

Stage 1 - Silent Autoimmunity

Stage 2 - Autoimmune Reactivity

Stage 3 - Autoimmune Disease
Elevated antibodies with no symptoms or loss of tissue

Elevated antibodies with symptoms and no clinically noticeable loss of tissue

Elevated antibodies with symptoms and measurable tissue destruction

Every Patient Presents Uniquely

Every patient suffering from an autoimmune disease has a unique combination of immune dysfunction patterns. Each patient will have specific immune triggers. That being said, there will be different reactions to treatments when compared to other patients.

After reflecting on our successes and failures over the past 27 years, we have critiqued our approach of autoimmune disorders.  We know what works and what doesn't.
